This is a very general guide, and your own Doctor may not follow exactly these steps or stages.
The likelihood is your Doctor will discuss your situation and pay careful attention to any symptoms.
They may go through an evaluation with you to try to determine the severity of the condition and make recommendations for treatment.
Treatment may include medications. Educate yourself about modern antidepressants, they can be extremely helpful and have far fewer side-effects and withdrawal symptoms than older style medications.Generally they will do you more good than harm, and not leave you "spaced-out" or feeling fogged out.
If you find a certain medication does not agree with you, then ask for an alternative. There are many different options available.
You should ALWAYS follow the full course of medication, if you stop taking it when you start to feel better you may suffer a relapse.
It may take a little while, perhaps a few days to a couple of weeks to experience some measure of relief, but the brain may take between six weeks to twelve weeks to fully rebuild itself and establish normal levels of hormones. It may be necessary to continue to take medication for several months or a year. Some people need to continue to take medications for longer.
Counselling may be recommended, and there may be a waiting list. You can often obtain Counselling services privately at your own expense, and this may help to address many problems and issues in your life that may be of tremendous help. Some people are reluctant to undergo counselling, but it can be very helpful. If you are not happy with a particular counsellor, then find an alternative who may be more suitable for your personality and needs.
Some Doctors may issue a diet sheet, do not underestimate the importance of nutrition and depression.
Some Doctors may discuss issues with Alcohol or Drugs, these can have a serious impact on depression, so be aware that alcohol can make depression worse or even cause it in the first place.
